Michigan named offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey appears to be favoring transfer quarterback Mikey Keene in the team’s open competition for the starting position.

The Wolverines have four quarterbacks competing for the job. High-profile freshman Bryce Underwood headlines the group alongside fellow transfer Jake Garcia and sophomore Jadyn Davis.

On3’s Anthony Broome reported all four remain in contention for the starting role.

However, sources close to the program suggest Lindsey is leaning heavily toward Keene. The Michigan Daily’s Sam Gibson revealed the coordinator’s preference for the fifth-year transfer.

Keene’s familiarity with Lindsey’s system gives him a clear advantage over other candidates.

The quarterback and coordinator worked together at Central Florida during the 2023 season. That shared experience has translated to early comfort with Michigan’s offensive installs, according to Gibson’s reporting.

“Keene also brings the advantage of previous familiarity with Lindsey, having played a season of snaps with Lindsey on the staff at Central Florida. Although fall camp has been underway for just a few days, Lindsey noted Keene’s comfortability with certain installs and his shrewdness in huddles.”

Garcia appears to be viewed as depth rather than a starter candidate. The transfer from Miami, Missouri and East Carolina will primarily serve as an emergency option if injuries arise.

“Garcia brings similar experience, albeit with less productive results, but remains a viable arm if injuries arise. Regardless of whether or not he sees meaningful snaps in the fall, sharing reps with Underwood, Davis and Keene provides valuable experience if he’s needed.”

The former Hurricane won’t receive priority in practice repetitions unless multiple injuries create opportunities.

Keene overcame upper-body injuries during spring practice to emerge as the frontrunner. The veteran quarterback transferred to Michigan specifically for this opportunity to compete for a starting position.

Despite Underwood’s status as a highly-recruited freshman, Keene appears positioned to lead Michigan’s offense this season.

The Wolverines face expectations to bounce back against conference rivals after recent struggles in Big Ten play.
