The legend of Mike Leach continues to grow.
College Sports Only recently shared a Reddit post across its social media feeds claiming Leach once proposed an unconventional football strategy.
“Mike Leach was talked down from lining up a little person in the backfield, and then throwing them over the line of scrimmage in short yardage situations,” the post stated.
The post also questioned: “Other than the optics of doing this, why wouldn’t this be allowed? And logistically, shouldn’t it work?”

Leach passed away on Dec. 12, 2022 at 61, during his third season coaching Mississippi State. The source of this claim remains unverified, as does the identity of the coach who reportedly discouraged the idea.
The innovative coach’s Air Raid offense revolutionized college football and produced one of the sport’s most extensive coaching trees.
Both Texas Tech and Mississippi State broke numerous conference passing records under Leach’s guidance.
Known for his candid personality, Leach frequently offered unfiltered thoughts on topics ranging from marriage to mascots and Bigfoot.
His 2011 book even featured a foreword titled “The Importance of Peeing on the Dog.”
While the truth behind this latest story can’t be confirmed, it certainly aligns with the unconventional thinking that defined Leach’s historic coaching career.
