Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s future remains uncertain following a weekend of controversy that began with reports of NIL negotiations gone wrong.
On Thursday, Pete Nakos of On3 reported that Iamaleava was seeking additional compensation in his deal with Tennessee. This prompted an immediate response from Nic Iamaleava, Nico’s father.
“More games being played off the field than on the field. Bi7ch Nakos from On3 called and asked me directly, I told him I had no idea on what he’s talking about. He said his ‘close source’ that he trusts with his life from the University of Tennessee staff gave him this,” Nico’s father wrote.
The situation escalated when Iamaleava missed practice on Friday, seemingly contradicting his father’s earlier statement.
New information suggests the quarterback and his father may not be responsible for the breakdown. According to Ryan Roberts of AtoZ Sports, an agent acted without authorization.
“Unannounced to both Nic and Nico, their agent went behind their back to work negotiations once again. When he overplayed his hand, things got messy quickly. He attempted to save some face with the family by blaming the Tennessee side,” Roberts wrote.
The controversy has placed Iamaleava’s college football future in jeopardy.
The continued silence from Iamaleava and his family has led to increasing questions about the quarterback’s character and intentions.
