North Carolina announced the hiring of Bill Belichick as head coach after the Super Bowl-winning coach came out of retirement. The move generated headlines across college football.

However, his early tenure has faced scrutiny from multiple angles.

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel questioned Belichick’s dedication to recruiting. Mandel pointed to missed opportunities during crucial recruiting weekends when top prospects visited campus.

“Is he really all that dedicated to his job? We know he spent a weekend in mid-May at the Miss Maine pageant. And my colleague Brendan Marks inadvertently and hilariously stumbled into him during a New England golfing weekend shortly after that. Nothing wrong with a little R&R, I suppose, except that May weekends are often when recruits take official visits. Most coaches in America were likely hosting at least a few.”

May represents a critical period for college football recruiting. Official visits during this timeframe often determine where top prospects commit.

Additional criticism has centered around Belichick’s girlfriend Jordon Hudson and a CBS interview that drew negative attention. The interview failed to redirect focus back to football.

USA Today’s Nancy Armour placed responsibility directly on Belichick.

“Hudson has the power and influence she does because Belichick gave it to her. Wrongly or rightly, and for reasons only he knows, this is what he wants. If there’s blame to be had for the soap opera that’s created, Belichick deserves more than an equal share of it.”

Belichick has been promoting his new book alongside his coaching responsibilities.

Months after the CBS interview aired, Belichick made claims about the network’s coverage to Beth Keith. He alleged CBS deliberately focused camera attention on Hudson during the interview.

“Secretly, CBS had a camera focused on Jordon where Lead producer Gabe instructed her to sit,” Belichick wrote to Keith.

The revelation adds another element to ongoing media scrutiny surrounding Belichick’s transition to college football.

North Carolina hired Belichick to rebuild a football program that’s struggled in recent seasons. The early focus on off-field issues has overshadowed discussions about roster construction and recruiting strategy.

Belichick won six Super Bowl titles as head coach of the New England Patriots before stepping away from the NFL.
