Notre Dame SoFi Partnership Explained: Why Fighting Irish Signed Historic Jersey Deal image

Notre Dame announced Tuesday it’s partnering with SoFi Technologies in a deal that will put the first non-apparel brand patch on Fighting Irish uniforms across all sports.

On3’s Pete Nakos reported the six-year agreement averages $18 to $20 million annually. That makes it the most valuable jersey sponsorship deal in college athletics history.

The partnership makes SoFi the official financial services partner of Notre Dame Athletics. It’s a big shift for a program that’s built its brand on tradition and keeping uniforms simple.

Breaking New Ground

SoFi will be the first company outside of apparel manufacturers to appear on Notre Dame jerseys. The banking company’s logo will sit on the upper-left portion of football uniforms starting in 2026.

Notre Dame said in a press release the deal is a “multi-year collaboration” that goes beyond just putting patches on uniforms.

Tuesday saw two major jersey patch announcements. Ohio State also revealed a partnership with JPMorgan Chase that includes uniform branding.

More Than Just Money

The SoFi deal includes financial education programs for student-athletes. Notre Dame and SoFi are creating a “student-athlete services hub” to help players with financial planning after graduation.

“Our ‘4 for Forever’ promise at Notre Dame is paramount to providing the best student-athlete experience in the country. SoFi shares in this commitment to developing strong, ambitious leaders who are set up for success at Notre Dame and beyond.”

That’s what Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua said about the partnership.

SoFi is also launching the “SoFi Champions Scholarship.” Each year, one male and one female walk-on student-athlete will receive a full tuition scholarship. The awards go to players who show “ambition, resilience, leadership and service.”

Fan Benefits

Notre Dame alumni and fans will get exclusive opportunities around gamedays and events. The partnership includes ticket giveaways, tailgates and private events.

SoFi CEO Anthony Noto said the company sees similarities between Notre Dame student-athletes and SoFi members.

“The grit, discipline and determination of Notre Dame’s student-athletes reflect the same ambition we see in our members every day. We are proud to partner with Notre Dame Athletics to help inspire the next generation and create opportunities that will shape their financial futures.”

The patches will appear on all Fighting Irish uniforms across every sport when the deal officially begins.
