The Ohio State Buckeyes are generating buzz around another potential freshman standout. This time it’s on the defensive side of the ball.

Devin Sanchez, a five-star cornerback, has Buckeyes fans comparing him to Jeremiah Smith on social media. Smith dominated as a freshman wide receiver last season and returns as a sophomore.

Both players wear No. 4, which has added to the comparison.

Sanchez arrived from North Shore High School in the Houston area as one of the nation’s top recruits.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound freshman ranked as the No. 5 recruit nationally in his class. He was also rated as the top cornerback prospect by 247Sports.

Some fans are pushing back on the early comparisons. They argue that measuring a cornerback’s impact is harder than tracking a wide receiver’s production.

Others point out that no one should be expected to match Smith’s freshman season.

But Sanchez is clearly making an impression during early practices. Ohio State typically doesn’t need freshmen to play major roles immediately given their recruiting success.

The program regularly lands four- and five-star prospects across the roster.

Sanchez appears to be the type of talent who’s ready for immediate impact. His daily practice matchups against Smith should prepare him well for anything opposing offenses can present.

The early buzz suggests Ohio State might have another special freshman ready to contribute right away.
