Ohio State announced Thursday it will keep head coach Ryan Day through 2031 with a new $87.5 million contract extension. The deal comes after Day led the Buckeyes to their first national championship in 10 years.

The extension, announced by Ohio State’s athletic department, will pay Day $12.5 million annually over seven years.

“I want to thank President Ted Carter, Director of Athletics Ross Bjork and the Board of Trustees for the confidence and trust they have in me to oversee this program,” Day said. “My family and I are incredibly grateful to be a part of the Ohio State community, this football program and Buckeye Nation.”

Under Day’s leadership, Ohio State became the first champion of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff format.

The Buckeyes’ path to the title included victories over Tennessee in the opening round, Oregon in the Rose Bowl, and Texas in the Cotton Bowl. They defeated Notre Dame 34-23 in the championship game.

“And I especially want to thank and commend all the young men, and their families, who are a part of this football program,” Day said. “This is a team of tough and determined individuals who drive our culture of respect, commitment and love.”

The extension provides stability for Ohio State as it heads into next season with new coordinators. The Buckeyes reached the championship despite not winning the Big Ten title.
