Spring football is approaching at the collegiate level, and questions surround whether coach Ryan Day’s Ohio State team can repeat as national champions.
With Will Howard heading to the NFL next month, the Buckeyes need to fill the quarterback position this fall. Julian Sayin, who saw limited action during his freshman year behind Howard, could be one option.
Howard endorsed Sayin as the potential starter during the NFL Scouting Combine.
“Julian’s one of the most accurate quarterbacks I’ve been around, and the ball just looks so pretty coming out of his hand,” Howard told reporters last Friday. “Like it spins prettier than I’ve seen a lot of balls come out of quarterbacks’ hands. And he’s got a real chance to be elite, man.”
The buzz around Sayin extends beyond Howard’s assessment. Sayin originally committed to Alabama under Nick Saban, but changed course after Saban’s retirement.
Before Saban stepped down, he was set to become Sayin’s coach.
Sayin discussed his transfer decision with AL.com in January, before Ohio State’s 34-23 national championship win against Notre Dame.
“It was definitely a little surprising,” Sayin said regarding Saban’s retirement.
Despite being a 5-star prospect praised by Saban for his quarterback efficiency, Sayin revealed a surprising detail about their connection.
“Just didn’t really have a relationship with them,” Sayin said. “Just felt like I should enter the portal and ended up at a great spot here.”
Now Sayin has an opportunity to prove himself at a college football powerhouse. Whether he becomes the starter remains to be seen, but the interest in his potential continues to grow.
