Ohio State faces a critical question at quarterback as it prepares to defend its national championship.
Julian Sayin could determine whether the Buckeyes repeat as champions. The redshirt freshman transferred from Alabama after Nick Saban’s retirement and now carries enormous expectations in Columbus.
ESPN’s Bill Connelly identifies Sayin as one of the key uncertainties facing Ohio State this season.
“Julian Sayin was the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback (and No. 9 overall prospect) in the 2024 recruiting class, moving on from Alabama to Ohio State after Nick Saban’s retirement,” Connelly writes. “The 6-foot-1 and 203-pound redshirt freshman isn’t the biggest dude in the world, but he has high-level arm talent and mobility. He could be dynamite right out of the gate. But if he isn’t?”
That question hangs over Ohio State’s championship hopes.
The Buckeyes essentially have two scenarios playing out. Sayin delivers immediately and helps lead another title run. Or he struggles early and creates uncertainty about both the quarterback position and the team’s championship expectations.
There’s little margin for error in Columbus this season.
Sayin entered college as one of the nation’s top prospects. His combination of arm strength and mobility made him a coveted recruit before he initially committed to Alabama.
The quarterback position often determines championship outcomes in college football. Ohio State learned that lesson during its title run last season.
Now Sayin must prove he’s ready to handle the pressure that comes with defending a national championship.
