The Pittsburgh Steelers finally addressed their quarterback needs on day three of the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting Will Howard after passing on several higher-profile prospects including Shedeur Sanders, who unexpectedly fell to the fifth round.
Steelers GM Omar Khan had signaled the team’s intentions before the draft began.
“We go to camp with four quarterbacks. Right now, we have two on the roster. All options are on the table for how we acquire those last two,” Khan told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Pittsburgh entered the weekend with just two quarterbacks on their active roster, a situation the front office clearly viewed as insufficient heading into summer workouts.
Howard, known for his competitive demeanor, previously demonstrated that intensity during a game against Tennessee.
“The funny thing is, they came out with their shirts off and ran over to the opposite end zone. What the f**k are these clowns doing? At that moment, I knew we had them,” Howard told Jon Gruden.
The draft selection became even more noteworthy when video captured Howard’s real-time reaction as the Steelers went on the clock.
“Please pick me Pittsburgh,” Howard said on camera moments before his phone rang with the news of his selection.
When speaking with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin after being drafted, Howard couldn’t contain his excitement about joining the organization.
“All Eagles fans, but now they’re going to be some d**n Steelers fans,” he told Tomlin.
Howard’s selection came after the Steelers passed on Sanders, who had been projected as one of the top quarterback prospects before his unexpected slide down the draft board.
