Ohio State announced that quarterback Julian Sayin needs to develop his mobility this season, according to head coach Ryan Day during Tuesday’s media session.
Day met with reporters to discuss program changes following the Buckeyes’ Cotton Bowl loss to Miami in the College Football Playoff. The team has made significant staff adjustments heading into the 2026 season.
Arthur Smith takes over as offensive coordinator, replacing Brian Hartline. Day addressed how this change affects Sayin, the Heisman Trophy finalist who needs to improve his rushing ability.
“We know that’s the X-factor that has to show up this year,” Day said about Sayin becoming a dual-threat quarterback.

Day wants to address these adjustments now during spring practice rather than waiting for fall camp.
The mobility isn’t a major part of Sayin’s current skill set. However, Ohio State could use it similar to how Indiana deployed Fernando Mendoza last season.
Day believes the coaching staff changes create an NFL-style environment in Columbus. Smith’s offensive system combined with defensive coordinator Matt Patricia gives Ohio State a professional approach that could help recruiting.
“I think he would tell you it’s a great place to go to work every day,” Day said about Patricia staying in Columbus. “Does he have options, did he have options? Yes. But I think he’s found a lot of joy in working with the guys here.”
The Buckeyes’ 2026 Pro Day is set for March 25. This serves as a critical follow-up to the NFL Scouting Combine for top prospects.
Caleb Downs will be among the most watched players during the process. He’s aiming to solidify his draft stock following potential injury concerns from the season.
