DeMarco Murray is heading back to the NFL, this time as a coach.

The Kansas City Chiefs are hiring Murray as their new running backs coach, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. The move completes an offseason overhaul of their offensive staff.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz first reported Murray as an emerging candidate earlier Wednesday.

Murray has coached Oklahoma’s running backs since 2020. He’s worked under both Lincoln Riley and Brent Venables during his time in Norman.

The former Sooners star returned to his alma mater after spending one season in the same role at Arizona in 2019. Oklahoma led the Big 12 in rushing during the 2022 season under Murray’s guidance, averaging 219.4 yards per game.

The Sooners followed that up with another explosive 2023 campaign, averaging 41.7 points and 507 total yards per contest.

Murray’s playing career spanned seven NFL seasons. He earned three Pro Bowl selections and won the 2014 Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year award with the Dallas Cowboys.

He finished with 7,174 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns after Dallas selected him in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Murray joins a Kansas City franchise that’s become a modern dynasty. The Chiefs have won three Super Bowls since 2019 behind quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

However, Kansas City missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014 this past season. The disappointing campaign prompted changes throughout the offensive staff.

Now Murray will look to translate his collegiate coaching success back to the NFL stage.
