Oregon’s quarterback coach has developed an unusual method for evaluating his signal-callers during spring practices. Koa Ka’ai asks recruits a simple question that reveals more than most traditional drills.
“Chocolate or vanilla ice cream?” That’s what Ka’ai wants to know from quarterbacks without any hesitation.
“If you pause on ice cream, what are you going to do on third down in front of 110,000 fans?”
Ka’ai explained his evaluation process to reporters this week during Oregon’s spring practices in Eugene.
The concept centers on split-second decision making. Ka’ai needs quarterbacks who can process information quickly and trust their instincts under pressure.

Any hesitation… and coach doesn’t want him.

The ice cream test measures something traditional drills can’t capture. It’s about natural decision-making ability rather than physical skills.
Ka’ai looks for quarterbacks who don’t overthink simple choices. The same mental process applies when reading defenses and making quick throws in high-pressure situations.
Any pause on the ice cream question raises concerns about a player’s ability to process information quickly during games.
The Ducks continue building their unique culture in Eugene. From distinctive uniform combinations to unconventional evaluation methods, Oregon finds ways to stand out in college football.
Oregon’s Spring Game is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, at 4 p.m. ET at Autzen Stadium in Eugene.
