Oregon gets bad injury news on 5-star freshman image

Oregon announced Monday that Trey McNutt, a five-star freshman defensive back, broke his right leg during fall training camp, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. The team hasn’t released a timetable for his return.

McNutt was ranked No. 26 nationally by On3/Rivals in the 2025 recruiting class. He’s the second-best safety and second-best player from Ohio in his class.

The injury removes one of Oregon’s biggest recruiting wins from what could have been an immediate impact role.

McNutt joined an elite group of five-star prospects in Oregon’s incoming class. Wide receiver Dakorien Moore (No. 5 overall) and cornerback Na’eem Offord (No. 12) were the other five-star commitments that helped Oregon land the fourth-ranked recruiting class nationally.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Cleveland native was expected to compete for playing time in Oregon’s secondary as a true freshman. Some projections had him potentially earning a starting role.

McNutt’s recruitment drew attention from major programs across the country. He received over 30 Division I scholarship offers from schools including Ohio State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Penn State, Tennessee and Michigan.

He committed to Oregon on Aug. 3, choosing the Ducks over Ohio State, Texas A&M, Florida and USC. McNutt officially signed with Oregon on Dec. 4.

Season Opener Approaching

Oregon opens its season Aug. 30 against Montana State at Autzen Stadium. The game kicks off at 4 p.m. Eastern Time and will air on the Big Ten Network.

The Ducks will need to avoid additional injuries as they prepare for their first season in the Big Ten Conference.
