The College Football Playoff kicks off Saturday night with No. 11 James Madison traveling to face fifth-seeded Oregon at Autzen Stadium.
The matchup gives the Ducks and head coach Dan Lanning a chance to prove last season’s early playoff exit was a fluke. Oregon finished undefeated as Big Ten champions in 2024 but stumbled in the second round, losing 41-21 to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.
The Ducks have been nearly unstoppable at home this season. Their only loss came in a 30-20 defeat to Indiana earlier this year.
James Madison enters with a 12-1 record and something to prove after earning a playoff bid despite playing in the Group of Five Sun Belt Conference.
The selection committee awarded bids to two non-Power Four conference champions this year: JMU and Tulane. This came after five-loss Duke won the ACC championship game, creating space for Group of Five teams in the bracket.
JMU’s lone loss this season came against Louisville. But the Dukes face a talent gap against Oregon, and Autzen Stadium presents one of college football’s toughest road environments.
Oregon enters as a 21-point favorite. ESPN’s FPI gives the Ducks an 88.2% chance to win.
This marks the first time Oregon has hosted a playoff game. The crowd has sold out every home game this season.
