RJ Day committed to Northwestern on Sunday, choosing the Wildcats over his father’s Ohio State program.
On3 Sports reported that the St. Francis de Sales quarterback picked Northwestern over Purdue and South Florida. His father, Ryan Day, serves as Ohio State’s head coach.
The 6-foot right-handed quarterback never received an offer from the Buckeyes. He wasn’t rated highly enough to earn scholarship opportunities from powerhouse programs.
RJ will be a senior this fall at the Columbus high school.
He’s been productive at the prep level. This past season, he threw for a school-record 482 yards in a playoff game that included the game-winning touchdown.

The commitment creates an interesting scenario within the Big Ten. Northwestern and Ohio State compete in the same conference.
Ryan Day won’t face his son immediately. RJ still has his senior high school season to complete before enrolling at Northwestern.
The younger Day will join a Northwestern program looking to rebuild under head coach David Braun. South Florida was also in contention, where former Ohio State assistant Brian Hartline recently became head coach.
RJ’s high school uses purple as its primary color, which matches Northwestern’s branding. He’ll transition from Columbus to Evanston to begin his college career.
The commitment represents the first major recruiting decision for the Day family outside Ohio State’s program.
