Lane Kiffin will return to Oxford on Sept. 19 when LSU faces Ole Miss in what’s shaping up as one of the most anticipated games of the 2026 season. The primetime ABC matchup will feature Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit calling the action.
Don’t expect a warm reception for the Tigers coach.
Kiffin left the Rebels after six seasons, signing a seven-year, $91 million deal with LSU. But it’s his recent comments about Ole Miss culture that have fans fired up ahead of his return.
The Oxford Police Department made their feelings clear this week. They responded to news of the confirmed game time with a GIF of Darryl Philbin from “The Office.” The post has been viewed over 2 million times.

Kiffin’s comments to Vanity Fair struck a nerve with Ole Miss supporters. He discussed recruiting challenges he faced while coaching the Rebels.
“When he was coaching there, Kiffin says, top recruits would tell him, “‘Hey, coach, we really like you. But my grandparents aren’t letting me move to Oxford, Mississippi.’ That doesn’t come up when you say Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Parents were sitting here this weekend saying the campus’s diversity feels so great: ‘It feels like there’s no segregation. And we want that for our kid because that’s the real world.'”
The LSU coach later clarified his remarks to Vanity Fair’s Chris Smith.
“I just hope [my comment] comes across respectful to Ole Miss…. There are some things that I’m saying that are factual. They’re not shots.”
The article noted demographic differences between the two college towns. Baton Rouge’s population is about 51% Black and 36% white. Oxford is roughly 66% white and 26% Black.
Smith also wrote that “Kiffin also seems willing to indirectly invoke Ole Miss’s struggle to distance itself from symbols like the Confederate flag, Colonel Rebel, and the nickname ‘Ole Miss’ itself.”
Tickets for the September game are already selling for thousands of dollars above face value.
The SEC West rivalry takes on new meaning with Kiffin’s return. His six-year tenure at Ole Miss included notable victories but ended with his departure to LSU last season.
