Paul Finebaum isn’t on the guest list for next week’s White House roundtable on college athletics, but that hasn’t stopped him from being concerned.

During a recent segment on “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” the ESPN host addressed Donald Trump’s planned March 6 meeting with some of the most influential figures in the sport. The attendees include former Alabama coach Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, every Power Four conference commissioner and select athletics directors.

PGA icon Tiger Woods and NBA commissioner Adam Silver are also expected to attend.

Finebaum made clear he supports the idea, but only if it leads to action.

“I hope so,” Finebaum said when asked whether the meeting could produce meaningful change. “If something doesn’t happen very quickly, and I mean in the next short period of time, and we’re talking about weeks, not years, then this thing could blow up.”

The gathering comes amid mounting frustration over NIL, the transfer portal and the lack of consistent national structure. Finebaum referenced an executive order issued by Trump in July that was intended to address parts of the chaos.

“We don’t need any more shows in college football,” Finebaum said. “We need action.”

He described the current landscape as bordering on unmanageable and warned of a potential breaking point if leadership fails to implement reform.

While stopping short of predicting a split among major conferences, Finebaum acknowledged rising tension behind the scenes.

“The key isn’t for sound bites,” he said. “The key is to actually get something implemented.”

There was no agenda laid out publicly for Trump and the 40-plus guests he’s hosting. The expectation is NIL, roster limits, and a salary cap similar to the pro model will be discussed.
