J.D. PicKell of On3 released his “Best games for every week of the CFB season” list, highlighting one matchup for Penn State: November 1 at Ohio State.
The Nittany Lions face their biggest test of 2025 when they travel to Columbus. Ohio State has dominated this rivalry under James Franklin, winning 10 of 11 meetings and eight straight dating back to 2017.
But Penn State returns what appears to be Franklin’s best roster in years.
Drew Allar enters his third season as the starting quarterback. He’ll work behind an improved offensive line with running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen returning for another season.
The defense brings back several impact players. Dani Dennis-Sutton recorded 8.5 sacks last season and returns as the primary pass rusher. Cornerback A.J. Harris has drawn first-round draft projections. Defensive tackle Zane Durant anchors the interior line.
Penn State’s appearance in the College Football Playoff semifinals provides additional context for 2025. The Nittany Lions lost to Notre Dame but gained experience that should benefit them this fall.
Franklin’s Future Tied to Ohio State
Franklin’s job security has been questioned for several seasons. Penn State’s playoff appearance in the expanded 12-team format bought him additional time, but beating Ohio State remains the program’s biggest hurdle.
The Nittany Lions faced criticism for their relatively favorable playoff path through SMU and Boise State before losing to Notre Dame.
November 1 in Columbus will determine whether Franklin can finally break through against the Buckeyes. The outcome may shape both his future and the program’s direction heading into 2026.
