Penn State capped a turbulent season with a 22-10 victory over Clemson in the Pinstripe Bowl Saturday, finishing 7-6 under interim coach Terry Smith.

Smith took over the program midseason after James Franklin’s dismissal. The Nittany Lions failed to meet preseason expectations that included College Football Playoff hopes.

The win marked the end of Smith’s brief tenure before Matt Campbell officially takes over the program.

“We could have very well quit, but they didn’t. They chose another path.”

Smith became emotional during postgame interviews, fighting back tears while reflecting on his time with the team.

“I love this group. They’re just a special group of guys. This is the greatest moment of my life.”

The former Penn State player stepped in during one of the program’s most challenging periods. His role extended beyond coaching as he worked to stabilize a program that desperately needed leadership.

Smith had a chance to reflect on the experience before officially handing responsibilities to Campbell.

“I love Penn State. I love football, and the game and Penn State have done amazing things for me and my family. I’m just thankful and grateful.”

Smith expressed confidence in Campbell’s ability to build on the foundation he helped establish during his interim period.

The transition between coaching staffs has gone smoothly according to Smith. Smith said Campbell’s communication has been excellent as they work together on roster management.

“The communication has been terrific. We’re just trying to piece together and retain roster and bring in new roster players. But he’s been very, very good. The guys that have come with him so far, they’ve been awesome, as well.”

Campbell faces the challenge of rebuilding a program that underperformed expectations this season. The new coaching staff must address roster retention while adding new talent.

Penn State’s bowl victory provides momentum heading into Campbell’s first offseason in Happy Valley.

The Nittany Lions now enter a crucial period as Campbell works to reshape the program’s direction for next season.
