The Miami Dolphins selected Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in the seventh round of the NFL Draft, much later than the former Longhorns star anticipated.

“I just didn’t know what was going on,” Ewers told ESPN. “But, I mean, it was nice [to get drafted], because at one point I’m like, ‘I’m not even going to get drafted. I’m going to go undrafted.'”

Ewers had another year of eligibility remaining at Texas and could have transferred to another program with a substantial NIL deal.

Instead, he declared for the NFL Draft where he fell to the final round.

“It was very unexpected, and I think that the toughest part about it is just the amount of unexpected occurrences there were,” he said. “But I’m glad that I ended up where I ended up. To go as late as I did, I’m glad it’s a good spot.”

Ewers’ slide received less attention than Shedeur Sanders’ draft-day fall.

Most draft analysts projected Ewers would be selected several rounds earlier.

The former Texas quarterback will compete for a roster spot in Miami.

If starter Tua Tagovailoa faces injury issues, Ewers could potentially see playing time during his rookie season.

Draft position becomes less relevant once players report to camp, as on-field performance ultimately determines opportunities.
