Texas QB Ewers impresses at pro day, projects as Day 2 selection

Quinn Ewers showcased his skills during Tuesday’s pro day in Austin, positioning himself as an intriguing quarterback prospect for teams without early first-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The former Texas Longhorns quarterback completed 54 of 59 passes during his workout, with most incompletions coming late in the session. His performance suggests he could be selected in the late second round, though the third round appears more likely.

Ewers demonstrated consistent accuracy throughout his throwing session. The few missed throws came near the end, possibly indicating fatigue after attempting nearly 60 passes in a compressed timeframe.

His deep ball accuracy stood out early in the workout. Ewers deliberately showcased his downfield passing ability, an area some scouts had questioned.

“Quinn Ewers letting it fly at @TexasFootball’s Pro Day ,” the NFL posted on social media with video of his performance.

He would fit best in a system that utilizes play-action deep shots, similar to schemes that helped Sam Darnold succeed with the Vikings last season. Any offense based on Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan principles could maximize his talents.

Ewers’ confidence was evident throughout the drills. His experience transferring from Ohio State and competing with highly-touted Arch Manning at Texas has developed his intangibles.

The Indianapolis Colts have shown surprising interest in Ewers. After drafting former Texas QB Sam Ehlinger in 2021, the Colts could consider Ewers with their second-round pick (No. 45 overall) despite signing Daniel Jones to compete with Anthony Richardson.

More realistic landing spots include the New York Jets (No. 73) and Pittsburgh Steelers (No. 84) in the third round. The Steelers have been consistently linked to Ewers, valuing his combination of arm talent and athleticism. The Jets are evaluating several quarterback prospects after Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders.

Neither team’s evaluation of Ewers is likely to change based on his pro day performance.

While Ewers was completing his pro day, Arch Manning began spring practice with Texas under coach Steve Sarkisian. Ewers’ draft position could influence Manning’s future draft stock as he prepares for his first season as the Longhorns’ starter.
