The Seattle Seahawks selected former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe with the 92nd overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft on Friday night, making him the fifth quarterback taken in this year’s draft.
Milroe will likely develop behind new starter Sam Darnold, who signed with Seattle last month after Geno Smith departed for Las Vegas. While Milroe isn’t expected to start immediately, it’s worth noting the last quarterback the Seahawks drafted in the third round was Russell Wilson in 2012.

Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Depth Chart
| Position | Player |
| 1 | Sam Darnold |
| 2 | Drew Lock |
| 3 | Jalen Milroe |
| 4 | Sam Howell/Jaren Hall |
1. Sam Darnold
Sam Darnold joins Seattle after the best season of his career in Minnesota. Following three difficult seasons with the New York Jets and two underwhelming years in Carolina, the former No. 1 overall pick had been widely considered a bust.
He rebuilt his reputation during one season with the Vikings.
After a preseason injury to rookie J.J. McCarthy, Darnold took control of Minnesota’s offense, leading the team to a 5-0 start. The Vikings finished 14-3 in the regular season. Darnold threw for 4,319 yards with 35 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
His season was somewhat diminished by a poor wild card performance against the Rams, where he threw an interception and was sacked nine times. Nevertheless, Darnold proved he can effectively run an offense in the right scheme. He currently stands as Seattle’s franchise quarterback.
2. Drew Lock
Drew Lock has previously spent time with the Seahawks. In 2022, he competed with Smith for the starting job but didn’t play after losing that competition. Lock re-signed with Seattle in March 2023 and played when Smith was injured, completing 48 passes for 543 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Last year with the Giants, Lock performed adequately as a backup, throwing for 1,071 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions. He added 133 rushing yards and two ground scores. His familiarity with Seattle likely gives him an edge over Milroe initially.
3. Jalen Milroe
Jalen Milroe stayed at Alabama throughout his college career, unlike many quarterbacks in his class who transferred. Over his final two seasons with the Crimson Tide, he threw for 5,678 yards with 39 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He added 1,257 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns on the ground.
While Milroe needs development as a passer, he’s a fast, physical runner with impressive speed for his 6-foot-2, 225-pound frame. He ran between 4.44 and 4.51 in the 40-yard dash at his pro day.
Seattle clearly sees Milroe as a potential franchise quarterback. For his rookie season, Mike Macdonald might create specific running packages for Milroe, especially considering Darnold isn’t much of a dual-threat quarterback.
4. Sam Howell, Jaren Hall
Seattle will likely move on from either Sam Howell or Jaren Hall this season. Both quarterbacks played when Smith was injured last year, and neither impressed.
Both appeared in three games for Seattle. Howell finished with five completions for 24 yards and an interception, while Hall recorded 13 completions for 168 yards and also threw one interception.
