Star cornerback chooses transfer portal over NFL Draft

Star cornerback chooses transfer portal over NFL Draft image

DJ McKinney has entered the transfer portal after two seasons with Colorado. The cornerback was once projected as a potential first-round NFL Draft pick in early mock drafts.

On3’s Hayes Fawcett first reported McKinney’s decision to leave Deion Sanders’ program. McKinney confirmed the move on his Instagram account.

The departure means Colorado loses one of its top defensive backs. McKinney started 22 games over two seasons in Boulder.

He recorded 97 tackles during his time with the Buffaloes. McKinney also tallied 14 pass breakups and four interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.

McKinney added one forced fumble and one fumble recovery to his college resume. His combination of length and ball skills made him a consistent starter on the outside.

Draft analysts had McKinney on their radar before he decided to return to college. His next destination remains unclear, with no schools publicly identified as targets.

McKinney attended Saturday’s Orange Bowl as a fan. He watched Texas Tech face Oregon in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal, according to video he shared on Instagram Stories.

Colorado’s roster turnover continues to accelerate this offseason. 247Sports reports the Buffaloes now have 28 players in the transfer portal.

The winter transfer window remains open through January 16.

McKinney enters the portal as one of the top defensive backs available. He brings starting experience and proven production to any program that lands his services.

The transfer represents another significant departure departure for Sanders’ program as it faces major roster changes heading into the offseason.
