The Pittsburgh Steelers signed former New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The Patriots released Peppers in late August. Head coach Mike Vrabel cited a lack of scheme fit.
Peppers joins the 1-0 Steelers as they face a shortage in their secondary. He’s expected to contribute immediately.
Secondary Depth Becomes Priority
Pittsburgh traded away Minkah Fitzpatrick over the summer, leaving them thin at safety.
DeShon Elliott suffered a knee injury during Sunday’s 34-32 win against the New York Jets. His absence created an urgent need for depth at the position.
Peppers was the 25th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. He’s entering his ninth NFL season after stops with the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, and Patriots.
The former Michigan standout appeared in six games in 2024. He recorded 40 tackles, one interception, two passes broken up, and a forced fumble.
Peppers has experience in multiple defensive systems throughout his career. He addressed his versatility on social media after New England released him.
“Going on 9 years in this league. I’ve had 7 HCs & 6 DCs lol There is no scheme you can place me in where I won’t find a way to be effective,” wrote Peppers.
The Steelers need immediate help in their secondary. Peppers should see significant playing time right away.
He’ll likely be active when the Seattle Seahawks visit Pittsburgh for the team’s home opener on Sunday.
