Syracuse announced that Calvin Russell III will be out indefinitely following a practice injury, according to head coach Fran Brown.

The former five-star recruit represents Syracuse football’s highest-ranked signee in two decades. Russell was expected to make an immediate impact this season.

Russell took an unusual path to the football field this spring. He joined the Orange basketball team first and remained on that roster through the ACC tournament before transitioning to football.

The team hasn’t disclosed the extent of Russell’s injuries. There’s no timeline for his return or indication whether he’ll be available for the upcoming season.

“I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players and the relationship Calvin, his family and I have. Calvin, best believe Orange Nation’s got your back.”

Russell brings rare physical tools to the receiver position at 6-foot-5. His size makes him one of college football’s most imposing receiving threats.

He posted strong numbers during his senior season at Miami Northwestern. Russell caught 47 passes for 742 yards and 8 touchdowns.

The versatile athlete also contributed as a quarterback and runner. He threw for 368 yards and 4 touchdowns while adding two rushing scores.

Russell helped Miami Northwestern reach the Florida 3A championship game under head coach Teddy Bridgewater.

Syracuse enters spring practice with 12 available wide receivers. None match Russell’s combination of size, recruiting pedigree and early career production.

The Orange will need other receivers to step up if Russell’s absence extends into the season.
