Tennessee’s defensive coordinator Jim Knowles brought one of his top players with him from Penn State. EDGE rusher Chaz Coleman followed Knowles to Knoxville as one of the most sought-after transfers in the portal.
But Coleman hasn’t been on campus for most of spring practice. He’s been dealing with homesickness and medical issues that kept him away from the team.
Now summer workouts have started, and Coleman still hasn’t shown up.
Knox News confirmed that Coleman didn’t report when voluntary workouts began May 25. A source told the publication that Coleman hasn’t arrived back on campus yet.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel addressed Coleman’s absence during his media availability. He didn’t provide specifics but made it clear the program will stick by their transfer.
“Chaz has been dealing with some things, and we’re here to support him and we’ll continue to go through that process,” Heupel said.
The situation took another turn this week. Fox Sports Knoxville’s William Patteson reported that Coleman deleted his Instagram account entirely.
“Tennessee EDGE Chaz Coleman has deleted his Instagram amid a post from earlier this month going viral online. The Penn State transfer has yet to arrive in Knoxville for voluntary workouts, and continues to be one of the most confusing storylines of the offseason,” Patteson posted.
This isn’t about money or NIL deals. Coleman is dealing with personal issues that go beyond football.
Tennessee doesn’t want to lose their top transfer addition. But the ongoing absence could become a distraction if it continues much longer.
The Volunteers are hoping Coleman can work through his personal situation and join the team soon. He’s a talented pass rusher who could make an immediate impact on Tennessee’s defense.
For now, the program is giving Coleman the space and support he needs while waiting to see if he’ll be ready for the upcoming season.
