Tennessee announced that sophomore defensive back Boo Carter will remain on the team despite missing multiple team activities. However, head coach Josh Heupel made it clear Carter won’t see the field until he meets certain requirements.

The situation came to light after CBS Sports reported that Carter had missed numerous team activities and was confronted by team leaders about his absences.

Carter was expected to be a key contributor on defense, offense and special teams for the Volunteers this season.

Team leaders stepped in to address Carter’s attendance issues directly. The leadership council has been involved in discussions with both Heupel and Carter about the situation.

Tony Basilio, a Volunteers insider, indicated Carter would face immediate consequences if he returned to the team.

“I’m hearing they’re going to make this kid earn his way back onto that team, if that’s what he wants to do. In other words, he’s going to lose some privileges here on the front end of fall camp.”

ESPN’s Chris Low reported that Carter would be given another opportunity before Heupel’s official statement.

During his press conference, Heupel confirmed Carter remains with the program but outlined conditions for his return to game action.

“Boo is a part of our team here. There’s some things he’s got to accomplish to get back on the field here. Don’t have a set timetable on that.”

Heupel praised the leadership council’s involvement in handling the situation.

“Our leadership council has been apart of those things, those discussions, with me and with Boo. I’m proud of what they’ve done. They care and love Boo, and want him to be his best too. And through this thing, I think Boo sees that as well.”

The Volunteers open their season against Syracuse in just over a month.

Carter’s status for the opener remains unclear as he works to meet the team’s requirements for returning to active participation.
