The Tennessee Volunteers start fall camp in just days before their season opener against Syracuse. But sophomore Boo Carter has missed numerous team activities, creating uncertainty about his status with the program.

Team leaders have confronted Carter about his absences, according to multiple reports.

Carter was expected to be one of Tennessee’s top players this season on defense, offense and special teams. The sophomore defensive back’s status remains unclear as fall camp approaches.

“Tennessee sophomore defensive back Boo Carter is expected to be one of the Volunteers’ best players in 2025 on defense, offense and special teams, but his status with the team is unclear as we inch closer to August,” CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani reported. “Carter has missed ‘numerous’ team activities and was even confronted by team leaders because of his absences.”

The situation extends beyond team activities. Carter has also cut ties with his former agent without notice.

Isaac Conner, Carter’s previous representative, learned about the change through social media rather than direct communication.

“I did represent Boo. However, I’m not sure I still do. He has been non responsive and so has his mother. They posted something about Omar Cooper representing him and advising him now.”

Head coach Josh Heupel has established that no individual player is bigger than the program. He reportedly wouldn’t hesitate to dismiss Carter if the situation doesn’t improve.

If Carter leaves Tennessee, he’s already been linked to a Big 12 program.

The timing creates additional pressure with fall camp starting July 30. Heupel is expected to address media questions about Carter’s status before camp begins.

“We’ll see how this situation plays out. For now, it feels like it’s 50/50 on whether Carter plays for the Volunteers this fall,” A to Z Sports’ Zach Ragan wrote.

Carter brings significant talent to Tennessee’s roster as a versatile player who contributes on multiple units. However, Heupel’s track record shows he prioritizes team standards over individual talent.

The Volunteers face Syracuse to open their season. Whether Carter will be part of that game plan remains completely uncertain as the program moves forward with fall camp preparations.
