Texas A&M pulled off the largest comeback in program history Saturday, erasing a 27-point halftime deficit to defeat South Carolina 31-30 in SEC action.
The third-ranked Aggies trailed 30-3 at the break before shutting out the Gamecocks in the second half. The comeback marks the first time in SEC history that a team has overcome a 27-point deficit in the league’s 93-year existence.
Mike Elko’s squad entered the contest as one of college football’s three remaining unbeaten teams at 9-0.
South Carolina, despite its 3-6 record, caught the Aggies off guard in the first half. The Gamecocks built what seemed like a commanding lead before Texas A&M’s historic rally.
The victory keeps the Aggies perfect at 10-0 heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
Texas A&M will likely maintain its position among the top teams when the College Football Playoff rankings are released Tuesday. Only three undefeated teams remain: the Aggies, Ohio State, and Indiana.
The two Big Ten programs are set to meet in early December for their conference championship.
For Texas A&M, two games stand between them and a spot in the SEC Championship Game on December 6 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Aggies host FCS opponent Samford before facing No. 10 Texas in the regular season finale.
The comeback performance demonstrated the team’s resilience under pressure. Elko’s squad faced its biggest test of the season and responded when it mattered most.
