Texas Coach Steve Sarkisian Takes Bizarre Shot at Ole Miss at Strange Time

Texas announced that head coach Steve Sarkisian made pointed comments about Ole Miss and their academic standards for transfer students during a recent interview.

Sarkisian told USA Today’s Matt Hayes that his program maintains strict academic requirements for transfers. “At Texas, we will only take 50% of a player’s academic credit hours,” Sarkisian said. “You may be a semester from graduating, but you’re going all the way back to 50% if you play here and want a degree.”

“But at Ole Miss, they can take you. All you have to do is take basket weaving, and you can get an Ole Miss degree.”

The Longhorns coach made several critical comments during the interview. He questioned NC State’s schedule strength after Texas recruited running back Hollywood Smothers from the Wolfpack program.

Sarkisian also challenged Miami’s College Football Playoff potential, suggesting the Hurricanes wouldn’t succeed playing Texas’s SEC schedule.

The timing of these comments creates additional scrutiny for Ole Miss following recent negative coverage.

Lane Kiffin’s Vanity Fair Comments Add to Ole Miss Criticism

Sarkisian’s remarks came days after Lane Kiffin made controversial statements about Ole Miss in a Vanity Fair profile. The LSU coach previously led the Rebels program before moving to Baton Rouge.

Kiffin’s comments focused on Oxford’s culture rather than academics. He suggested the community has issues with prejudice that affected his tenure there.

Two SEC coaches have now publicly criticized Ole Miss within the same week. Kiffin reportedly stays active in a group chat with other SEC head coaches, according to reports from South Carolina’s coaching search.

Current Ole Miss coach Pete Golding hasn’t responded to either set of comments.

The coordinated nature of these media appearances raises questions about whether the criticism represents a broader conference sentiment. Both coaches chose high-profile outlets to make their statements public.

Ole Miss finished last season with strong recruiting momentum under Golding’s first year leadership. The Rebels signed several high-profile transfers during the most recent portal window.

Academic standards for transfers vary across SEC programs, with each school maintaining different credit hour requirements and degree completion policies.
