Toledo has found its next head football coach after a quick search following Jason Candle’s departure to UConn.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Wednesday morning that the Rockets are finalizing a deal with Mike Jacobs as their new head coach.
Jacobs spent the past two seasons at FCS program Mercer, where he compiled a 20-6 record and led the Bears to consecutive FCS Playoff appearances.
The hire makes perfect sense for Toledo on multiple levels.
Jacobs is a Maumee native, growing up just outside Toledo. He played offensive line at Ohio State before beginning his coaching career.
Most importantly, he’s won everywhere he’s coached.
Jacobs started his head coaching career at Division III Notre Dame College from 2016-2019, posting a 42-8 record. He then moved to Division II Lenoir-Rhyne for four seasons and went 32-9.
His move to Mercer in 2023 marked his first job in Division I football.
Jacobs has never lost more than three games in any season as a head coach.
The new Toledo coach was in the running for the Bowling Green job last offseason before the Falcons hired Eddie George.
Toledo needed to replace Candle quickly as programs across the country finalize their coaching staffs for the upcoming season. Candle compiled a 82-38 record in nine seasons with the Rockets, including three MAC Championships.
The Rockets finished 7-6 last season and lost to Pitt in the GameAbove Sports Bowl.
