Tennessee continues pursuing Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt despite reports Monday that the transfer portal star had committed to LSU.

Sources told On3 that no paperwork has been signed and the Volunteers remain actively involved in recruiting Leavitt.

Vols officials and Leavitt’s representatives have maintained “regular contact” throughout Monday. Tennessee was never informed that Leavitt had decided on LSU, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

The Volunteers are preparing one final offer for the quarterback and his camp.

LSU coach Lane Kiffin needs to secure a starting quarterback after losing his previous starter to the transfer portal. The bidding war for Leavitt has reached the $4 million to $5 million range, driven by competition between LSU, Tennessee and Miami.

Tennessee coach Josh Heupel and his staff haven’t backed down despite momentum appearing to favor LSU earlier Monday. The Volunteers are seeking clarity at quarterback with Joey Aguilar’s 2026 eligibility status uncertain.

Leavitt visited Miami over the weekend but left Sunday without making a commitment.

He returned to Arizona to discuss his options with his advisors.

Landing Leavitt would address a critical need for Kiffin, who’s still looking for a clear starting quarterback despite adding Elon transfer Landen Clark to the roster.

The former Arizona State star has thrown for 4,652 career yards with 46 total touchdowns during his college career. He began at Michigan State before transferring to Arizona State, where he led the Sun Devils to a Big 12 title and College Football Playoff berth in 2024.

LSU believed it had secured Leavitt’s commitment, but the recruitment remains fluid with Tennessee making a late push.
