Travis Scott’s pre-recorded halftime performance aired during Monday’s College Football Playoff national championship game between Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Scott performed his new single “4×4” from the roof of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The performance, while broadcast during halftime on ESPN, was not live.

Reggie Chatman Jr. of ESPN confirmed the pre-recorded nature of the show on social media: “Ohio State’s band was on the field at the time it was broadcast. After they left the field, they started playing it on the halo board.”

The performance featured music-video style camera work as Scott performed atop the stadium roof, creating confusion among some fans in attendance who expected to see the artist perform live inside the venue.

Fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium instead watched the recorded performance on the stadium’s video boards during the break.

The brief performance generated significant social media reaction, with many fans commenting on the unexpected format:

“This Travis Scott performance look like a bourbon commercial,” posted @DragonflyJonez on Twitter.

“Everybody that went to the game for a Travis Scott concert seeing on top of the stadium,” wrote @LoswitheMos, accompanied by a confused reaction gif.

The performance marked the first time the College Football Playoff championship game featured a halftime musical performance in this format, breaking from the traditional marching band shows.
