The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to select California quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in tonight’s NFL Draft. But the quarterback landscape gets murky after that first selection.
Ty Simpson projects as the second quarterback drafted. The former Alabama starter’s draft position remains uncertain heading into the evening.
If Mendoza is the only quarterback selected in the first round, it would mark just the third time in 20 years that only one signal-caller went in the top 32 picks.
Simpson’s draft stock carries questions despite leading Alabama to the College Football Playoff last season. His game tape shows inconsistency throughout his one year as the Crimson Tide’s starter.
The quarterback also sustained broken ribs during Alabama’s Rose Bowl loss to Indiana. That injury occurred in the postseason and could factor into teams’ evaluations.
Draft analysts label Simpson a “Day 2 developmental quarterback” with the traits needed to develop into an NFL starter. He completed passes for 3,567 yards with 28 touchdowns and five interceptions in his final college season.
