UCLA officially announced Nico Iamaleava as their new quarterback Sunday, completing his transfer from Tennessee after reported NIL negotiations involving millions of dollars.
In a corresponding move, former UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar has committed to Tennessee, On3 reported Monday night.
Aguilar chose the Volunteers over Wake Forest and Tulane.
The quarterback never played a down for UCLA after transferring there from Appalachian State this spring.
Iamaleava’s arrival at UCLA effectively displaced Aguilar, creating an opportunity for Tennessee to add experienced depth at the position.
Aguilar brings significant experience to Knoxville, having thrown for over 3,000 yards in each of his two seasons at Appalachian State. He played two junior college seasons before joining the Mountaineers.

The financial details surrounding both transfers remain unclear. Iamaleava reportedly earned $2.5 million at Tennessee but sought $4 million before entering the transfer portal. The Volunteers declined this request.
Aguilar’s compensation at Tennessee has not been disclosed, though the program likely had additional NIL funds available following Iamaleava’s departure.
These quarterback moves represent the evolving landscape of college football’s transfer portal and NIL era, where players can quickly change programs based on financial and playing time opportunities.
