Lombardi was Belichick’s first major hire when he took over the program. The 30-year NFL veteran brought extensive front office experience to Chapel Hill, including eight years with the Raiders under Al Davis and a stint as Cleveland’s general manager in 2013.

The decision stems from a human resources complaint filed by a former UNC front office employee, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports.
UNC’s administration made the call to place Lombardi on leave, not Belichick, according to On3.
The Tar Heels called it a “personnel matter” and said program members can’t discuss the situation publicly. North Carolina hasn’t revealed additional details about what led to Lombardi’s administrative leave.

Lombardi’s Role and Impact
Lombardi serves as the program’s general manager, handling talent acquisition through the transfer portal and recruiting. His role became crucial after North Carolina’s disappointing 4-8 debut season under Belichick in 2025.

“We consider ourselves the 33rd NFL team,” Lombardi said after his hiring. The comment drew criticism when the Tar Heels struggled in their first season.
