USC announced that Lincoln Riley is entering his fifth season as head coach with what he calls the strongest program alignment he’s experienced since arriving in Los Angeles.

Speaking to media in Chicago, Riley highlighted the stability the Trojans have built after navigating major transitions. The program has worked through a new coaching staff, new university president, new athletic director, conference realignment, and the recent move into the Bloom Football Facility.

“Right now, I feel like our alignment is as strong as it’s ever been,” Riley said.

That stability is paying off in recruiting and roster retention. USC secured a top-tier recruiting class this cycle.

The Trojans made significant coaching additions during the off-season. Gary Patterson joined as defensive coordinator. Mike Ekeler was hired as special teams coordinator.

Riley praised Patterson’s impact on the program. “I’ve never coached against somebody that I thought was more unique and tougher to go against than Gary Patterson,” he said. The defense has been challenging USC’s offense throughout spring practice.

Ekeler brings energy and attention to detail that Riley values.

Jayden Maiava joined Riley at the media event as USC’s starting quarterback. Jide Abasiri and transfer Alex VanSumeren represented the defensive line.

Riley singled out Maiava’s development since arriving at USC. Of all the quarterbacks Riley has coached, Maiava has shown the most growth from his first day to now.

The coach maintained his championship expectations for the program. “Every year I expect to win, I expect us to win. I expect us to compete for and win championships,” Riley said.

USC went undefeated at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum last season.

Riley wants to reestablish the Coliseum as a dominant home-field advantage. He’s also focused on preserving the historic rivalry with Notre Dame.
