The Minnesota Vikings announced they’ll start the season with J.J. McCarthy as their quarterback, marking the third consecutive year with a different starter under center.

The 22-year-old missed his entire rookie season after tearing the meniscus in his right knee. He’s now healthy and taking control of one of the NFL’s top offenses.

McCarthy wasn’t the primary focus of Michigan’s national championship offense during his college career. He often served as a game manager, though one with mobility.

His physical abilities and endorsement from Jim Harbaugh helped him land in the first round. However, some question whether he’s ready to lead a franchise.

Colin Cowherd recently discussed conflicting reports about McCarthy’s training camp performance on "The Herd."

“J.J. McCarthy threw a pick for a third straight day,” Cowherd said. “There’s so much mystery here: why does Minnesota keep flirting with other quarterbacks, and there are too many conflicting reports on McCarthy? I feel like sometimes there’s a bit of a spin job here. His arm and escape ability are modest; his release wasn’t super quick—there’s no great trait.”

The criticism comes during June practices before players wear pads.

These early results typically don’t predict regular season performance.

McCarthy is still learning Kevin O’Connell’s offensive system. He faced an initial setback with his knee injury that delayed his return to full activity.

The Vikings aren’t expecting McCarthy to be a finished product immediately.

If struggles continue into August preseason games and he shows no development as an NFL passer, legitimate concerns may arise. Early summer evaluations carry little weight in predicting season outcomes.
