The Minnesota Vikings continue exploring ways to support rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy as he prepares for his first NFL season.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report identified New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston as a trade target that makes sense for Minnesota. Winston is currently slated to back up Russell Wilson this season.

“While Winston can be an effective spot starter and is a tremendous locker room leader, he should most interest teams looking for a dedicated backup and mentor,” Knox wrote. “The Minnesota Vikings and Titans would both make sense.”

The Vikings don’t have much veteran experience behind McCarthy right now.

“While Minnesota did trade for Sam Howell this offseason, it doesn’t have a ton of experience behind second-year quarterback and first-year starter J.J. McCarthy.”

McCarthy was selected 10th overall from the University of Michigan in the 2024 Draft. He’s expected to start immediately in head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system.

The setup looks good for the rookie. Minnesota’s offense features elite weapons like Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and Aaron Jones.

Sam Darnold’s career revival last season showed what O’Connell can do with quarterbacks. The Vikings invested significant draft capital in McCarthy, who won a national championship at Michigan.

But Knox’s point about veteran depth makes sense. Howell remains largely unproven despite his experience with Washington. Winston brings 10 years of NFL experience and strong leadership qualities.

Winston’s on-field inconsistencies are well-documented. But he could provide valuable mentorship for McCarthy while serving as a capable backup in O’Connell’s system.

The Giants face their own quarterback situation. They have Wilson, first-round pick Jaxson Dart, and Winston competing for roster spots.

A trade would address needs for both teams. Minnesota gets veteran leadership and depth. New York clears roster space and potentially gains draft compensation.

The Vikings have already shown they’re willing to make moves to support McCarthy’s development. Adding Winston would give them another experienced voice in the quarterback room.
