Arion Carter announced he’s returning to Tennessee for his senior season after briefly entering the transfer portal following an NFL Draft declaration.
The linebacker has been a cornerstone of the Volunteers’ defense throughout his career. Carter’s decision to enter the portal came as a shock after he’d already declared for the draft.
Carter faced a tight deadline regarding his college eligibility, according to 247Sports.
“After announcing last month that he was forgoing his senior season at Tennessee to enter the NFL draft, Vols linebacker Arion Carter has now reversed course and decided to continue his college career. Carter plans to withdraw from the NFL draft and enter the NCAA transfer portal,” 247 Vols’ Ryan Callahan wrote.
Tennessee’s coaching staff reached out to Carter directly after his portal entry. The discussions led to Carter reconsidering his departure from Knoxville.
The linebacker’s initial decision stemmed from roster changes under the new coaching staff. Tennessee had brought in Penn State transfer Amare Campbell, who led the Nittany Lions in tackles last season.
“Carter had his reasons for going that route, one of them being Tennessee basically replaced him with Knowles bringing in Campbell, his top tackler at Penn State in 2025. A back-and-forth situation from Friday night into Sunday ultimately ended with Carter and Tennessee working out his return,” 247 Vols’ Patrick Brown reported.
Carter’s off-field character has drawn attention recently for deeply personal reasons.
A video shared by VolQuest’s Austin Price shows Carter shaving his girlfriend’s head as she undergoes chemotherapy treatment for stage two breast cancer. Mariah Bryant, a trauma ICU nurse in Nashville, had started losing her hair during treatment.

Carter surprised Bryant by shaving his own head after cutting hers.
The gesture wasn’t intended for public attention. Carter was simply supporting someone he cares about during her cancer battle.
The moment highlights Carter’s character beyond football. For the senior linebacker, returning to Tennessee means more than just playing another season.
Carter will compete for playing time in what’s expected to be a crowded linebacker room next season. His experience and leadership could prove valuable as Tennessee looks to improve defensively under the new coaching staff.
