The NFL Scouting Combine kicks off this week in Indianapolis as prospects look to boost their draft stock. Between measurements, drills and interviews, players will try to convince teams they’re worth a first-round pick.
Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson won’t be participating in on-field workouts.
The Athletic’s Dane Brugler reported that Tyson is sitting out testing due to a hamstring injury that bothered him throughout the 2024 season.
Injury concerns limit Tyson’s participation
Tyson missed three regular-season games with the hamstring injury. He also didn’t play in Arizona State’s bowl game against Duke.
The injury clearly affected his performance. Tyson had four 100-yard receiving games before getting hurt, averaging nearly 90 yards per contest. He led the team in receiving for six of the first seven games.
After returning from injury, he managed just 61 and 22 yards in his final two games.
Tyson finished the season with 711 receiving yards and eight touchdowns despite the injury issues. Most draft analysts still project him as a first-round pick.
The decision to skip testing makes sense for Tyson’s draft stock. Running at less than 100 percent could only hurt his position with teams.
He’s currently viewed as the third-best receiver in this draft class. A poor 40-yard dash time could drop him from the middle of the first round to the end of it.
Draft position at stake
Other receivers like KC Concepcion, Denzel Boston and Omar Cooper Jr. continue rising on draft boards. Strong Combine performances from those players could push Tyson down team’s rankings.
Tyson’s injury history may already have teams concerned. He doesn’t need to give them more reasons to hesitate when making draft decisions in April.
Arizona State’s pro day will give Tyson another chance to work out for interested teams. He’ll be able to test when fully healthy rather than risking a poor performance this week.
How Tyson addresses health questions during media interviews will be the most important part of his Combine experience. Teams want to know if the hamstring issues will continue affecting his availability.
The wide receiver is known for his route-running ability and knack for creating separation. He can line up in the slot or on the outside, making him valuable for NFL offenses.
