On3 Sports reported that Taron Dickens has decommitted from North Carolina and will re-enter the transfer portal.

The Western Carolina transfer quarterback had committed to play for Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels earlier this season. Dickens posted outstanding numbers at the FCS level in 2025, throwing 38 touchdowns against just two interceptions.

He completed 74.2% of his passes for 3,508 yards and added 321 rushing yards.

Academic Issues Force Decommitment

Dickens decommitted “because of academic reasons,” according to On3 Sports.

The report didn’t provide additional details. North Carolina officially released Dickens from his commitment.

Dickens threw 51 touchdowns with just five interceptions during his career at Western Carolina. He could be a valuable late addition for another program assuming no major issues prevent his transfer.

Tar Heels Still Have Transfer Options

North Carolina brought in two other transfer quarterbacks this season.

Billy Edwards transferred from Wisconsin. Miles O’Neill came from Texas A&M.

Both Edwards and O’Neill come from Power Five programs. Neither has posted college statistics comparable to Dickens’ production at the FCS level.

North Carolina must now work with its current quarterback room as Belichick prepares for his first season coaching college football.
