Deion Sanders Creates Nike Controversy with Girlfriend Karrueche Tran

Deion Sanders Creates Nike Controversy with Girlfriend Karrueche Tran image

Deion Sanders called out someone in his family for abusing his Nike connection during a recent Well Off Media video. The Colorado Buffaloes head coach wasn’t angry, but he wanted to make a point.

The video shows Sanders at home with girlfriend Karreuche Tran, daughter Deiondra Sanders, and grandson Snow. Sanders noticed Deiondra’s Nike Air Dunk lows and asked how she felt about someone abusing the Nike privilege.

He wasn’t really talking to Deiondra.

Prime’s Nike Interrogation

Sanders claimed some family members were taking the Nike connection too far. Deiondra seemed confused about who he meant.

“I didn’t know you could take it too far,” she said.

Sanders moved closer to Deiondra but kept the conversation general. He said they both knew who the two people were that abuse the Nike setup. Deiondra guessed Shilo Sanders first, but that wasn’t who Prime meant right now.

“It’s not him, he’s exhausted his account,” Sanders said.

Deiondra went through the usual suspects. Not Bucky (Deion Jr., who was filming). Not Shedeur, who has his own Nike deal. Not Bossy, Sanders’ youngest daughter.

That’s when Bucky identified the real target from behind the camera.

Tran didn’t seem offended by the accusation. She explained that she orders shoes for outfits Prime calls “cute” and makes sure to get pairs for everyone in his circle. That includes Lauren, a CU athletic trainer, Prime’s mother, and his sister.

“She knows,” Sanders said. “Her game is second-to-none.”

Prime’s Commentary Parallels A Real Nike Concern

Sanders’ playful complaint comes at an interesting time for Nike. When he took the Colorado job, people wondered about the team’s apparel deal.

Colorado was already a Nike school. But Sanders had a partnership with Under Armour, Nike’s competitor.

The relationship got patched up quickly. Sanders and Nike are back on the same page.

Nike’s presence in Boulder has been huge since Sanders arrived. Travis Hunter jokes about “stealing” shoes from Prime’s office in videos. Bucky negotiates which pairs he gets versus which ones go to his father.

Smitty, CU’s equipment manager, has become something of a celebrity showing off Nike products in Well Off Media content.

The video feels like Sanders having fun with his family. But there’s some real irony here.

Heavy Is The Head That Wears The Crown

Nike is facing problems right now. Much of it is their own fault.

For 10-15 years, Nike benefited from hype around almost everything they released. Sneakerheads and resellers tried to out-hype each other on most drops. This created a huge market and a resale market that might now be Nike’s biggest problem.

The economy and other factors have hurt that consumer base. Nike’s hype has died off quite a bit. Consumers are picking what to buy instead of seeing everything sell out immediately.

The resellers are looking at other brands. The nostalgic connection isn’t as strong. The crowd that fueled the hype era is getting older and less likely to buy everything.

There’s growing talk about liquidation rates. After years of everything selling out, more products are sitting on shelves. In a 2023 meeting with the Sanders family, Shilo asked Nike about liquidation rates. The Nike rep said they never wanted anything to sit.

The problem is products sitting has become a real concern.

The Sanders family promotes Nike well. They show signature samples, custom sneakers made for Prime, and tons of colorway options that rarely hit stores. Nike needs to fix their own issues now.

Pricing, how much they make, how often they release products, and their inability to control resale markets are real problems.

Sanders seemed to just give his family a friendly jab about his Nike connection. But it speaks to a larger concern he probably didn’t intend.

Nike is still king of the hill. But competitor brands are trying to cut into their market share. To stay the best sneaker company, Nike needs to address the problems in their market.

How Nike supplies its signature athletes and preferred customers might need a look. Nike probably won’t have issues with the Sanders family, but this points to a bigger problem.

If Nike wants to stay king of the sneaker world, big changes could be coming. Even if they don’t directly affect Sanders or the Colorado Buffaloes.
