Georgia announced Friday that four-star quarterback Colton Nussmeier has committed to the Bulldogs for the 2027 recruiting class. The commitment gives coach Kirby Smart one of the most recognizable names in prep football.
Nussmeier ranks as a top-15 quarterback nationally and carries a top-200 overall rating. But it’s his family connections that make this pledge particularly notable.
The Texas quarterback is the younger brother of LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, who’s expected to start for the Tigers this season.
That creates a potential future storyline. If both quarterbacks develop as expected, Georgia-LSU matchups could feature brothers on opposing sidelines.
Football runs in the family
The quarterback bloodline extends beyond college football. Colton’s father is Doug Nussmeier, the current offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints and a respected NFL offensive mind.
That background means Georgia’s newest commit grew up around meeting rooms and game plans. He’s been exposed to high-level football strategy since childhood.
“I like everything about them,” Nussmeier said of Georgia. “I like the way they run the program. I like the staff a lot. I know the feel. I know how they run their offense.”
Georgia won a competitive battle
The Bulldogs beat out more than 20 scholarship offers from Power Four programs. Smart had been searching for his centerpiece quarterback in the 2027 cycle.
Nussmeier was one of the highest-rated available quarterbacks still on the board.
The timing worked perfectly for both sides. Georgia needed a quarterback. Nussmeier wanted a program that matched his championship expectations.
Why this commitment matters
The rankings tell part of the story. Four-star prospect. Top-15 quarterback nationally. Those numbers matter in recruiting.
But Nussmeier’s football environment may matter more. Few quarterback prospects enter college with his background. He’s watched his brother navigate SEC football. He’s watched his father coach in the NFL.
That experience gives him a head start most recruits don’t have.
The commitment continues Georgia’s championship-level recruiting. Smart didn’t just add another talented player. He added a quarterback with SEC roots, NFL bloodlines and a recognizable name.
For the Bulldogs, that combination was too good to pass up.
