The Indiana Hoosiers are building on their national championship success under Curt Cignetti, who’s entering his third season. The team will have a different look at wide receiver this fall after a key departure.
Omar Cooper Jr. announced Monday he’s declaring for the NFL draft. Cooper was quarterback Fernando Mendoza’s top target during Indiana’s championship run.
“I’m proud to represent my city and my state, and these last four years in Bloomington have meant everything to me. This program has pushed me, shaped me, and gave me memories I’ll carry forever,” Cooper wrote.
Cooper credited the Hoosiers with making him a better receiver, teammate, and person in his announcement.
Cignetti had praised Cooper’s development throughout the season.
“He’s really good after the catch, and just has a lot of potential and ability. And he’s become more consistent. Still has more consistency, steps in consistency he can take. But I’ve seen him really progress and evolve,” Cignetti said via 247 Sports.
The Hoosiers won’t be left empty-handed at the position. Charlie Becker returns for another season with the team.
Indiana also added Nick Marsh through the transfer portal. The former Michigan State receiver brings speed to the offense.
New quarterback Josh Hoover will have weapons to work with as he takes over the offense.
The Big Ten will release full conference schedules Tuesday afternoon for all 18 programs. That officially starts the countdown to fall football.
The Big Ten has won three straight national championships. Indiana appears positioned to compete for another title run.
The Hoosiers’ football renaissance enters a new chapter by August.
